The Hokkaido Wolf (Canis lupus hattai) was a subspecies of the Gray Wolf, native to the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido. The wolf was deemed a threat to ranching by the Meiji government, and was subsequently the victim of an institutional eradication program; a bounty system and direct chemical extermination campaign. The last of these beautiful and unique wolves died in 1889.
