'Narwhal, Spacewalk'
'Narwhal, Spacewalk'
2011

Archival inkjet print mounted on Sintra
16 x 16 in

This image is based on the famous spacewalk photo, but the astronaut has been replaced by a floating narwhal. Narwhals (Monodon monoceros), the unique species which may have spawned the unicorn myth, are poached for their beautiful 'horns' (which are, in fact, long spiraling teeth) and have been deemed threatened due to climate change. Kendler's replacing of the human figure in this iconic image makes us think of "a world that might have been otherwise" where cetaceans became the planet's dominant technological species.
