From the series Extinction Portraits

The Hokkaido Wolf is an extinct subspecies of the Gray Wolf, which was deliberately driven to extinction by human beings. The Japanese Meiji government considered the wolves a threat to the ranching plans they had for the island of Hokkaido, so set poisoned baits for them. They became extinct quite soon after, due in part to habitat disruption.
