Extinction Portraits
2007
graphite or paper with frames, vintage award ribbons, and engraved brass plaques
This series of pencil drawings features portraits of human beings wearing masks of extinct animals' faces. Each animal's mask is worn by a person whose portrait was made in the year that the animal became extinct, raising questions of identity. Are we culpable? Do we identify with them? How do we as human beings take on the identities of these lost animal species?

The museum-style brass plaques below is inscribed with the animal's common name, it's scientific name, and the year in which it became extinct.
