Spill (Spell for Endangered Cranes)
Spill (Spell for Endangered Cranes)
Vintage porcelain birds, acrylic, powdered graphite, human hair
5 x 22 x 11 in.
2012

Spill was created while thinking back on the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The cranes appear to be either inhaling or expelling an oily black liquid. The human hair in the piece also references the hair that people all over the country sent to the Gulf, which was made into absorbent baffles to protect the coastlines. I found it meaningful that we were protecting this land and the species that dwelt there with material from our own bodies.
