Fungi for Fungi
Cast mushrooms (designed to fertilize fungus as they compost) to be installed in a forest in need of bioremediation, a small attempt at reparations
2013
Fungi for Fungi are biodegradable sculptures cast from materials designed to fertilize fungus as they break down. At the end of each exhibition of the work, the sculptures are 'installed' outside in various locations. After Projections Animalières in Bourges, France, the mushrooms were installed by curator Caroline Picard alongside the ruins of a Roman wall. The iteration of the work shown in Rooted in Soil at the DePaul Art Museum will be taken to a forested slope in a nearby nature preserve. As the sculptures break down, their components will nourish the soil and promote the growth of actual fungus, which in turn will continue to enrich and stabilize these disrupted semi-urban ecosystems.
